sixth & seventh part – summary

I did both the 6th and the 7th part two times – though for different reasons.

The 6th stretch took me along the River Sihl to one famous roundabout that looks very American and then onward to Baar. The path along the River looks very nice from the train. It is quit different from the path: the noise of the cars is awful and for the biggest part it’s everything else than a romantic walk. But still, seeing it from this perspective was very interesting. The noise and the traffic were two reasons why I’ve decided to give the 6th leg another try – over the hill. That was very interesting because I was actually walking „over the railway“ (the train is in a tunnel there) and it was a totally new part of Switzerland for me.

When I did the 7th part for the first time it was a little foggy. When I got off the train in Baar I thought that the fog will be gone soon. But no, for the most part I walk in very dense fog and at the end I had no idea, how the landscape looked around me. So one morning when the weather was fog-less I wanted to that same walk again. This time I knew how it looked – but I have to say that being in the fog was somehow more interesting. Funny how things go.

fifth part – summary

This was a noisy stretch. Starting in Horgen the way was steep up the hill. I crossed the highway (underneath) and the noise of the cars followed me even into the forrest.
The little village on top was quiet with horses, a pony and to pig mommies with little ones.
As soon as I started descending into the Valley of the Sihl (Sihltal) the noise of the cars on the street down there were annoying me.
But lucky me: there were some birds enjoying the warm morning and were chirping in the sun.

fourth part – summary

The fast train from Zürich to Thalwil takes a tunnel. It used to go by the lake with a wonderful view into the mountains. Today I was able to enjoy that wonderful view again. I started in Rüschlikon – a village I usually don’t see because of the tunnel.

My walk took me through an area of older and newer one-family-houses (as we call them) with nice gardens or high hedges. Because I knew from last time that it might be a little boring, I was heading for the woods. After almost an hour I finally reached it and there was more than just blackbirds an sparrows: I heard jays and wood pigeons and tits. The sun shone on the flowers on the edge of the woods and bumblebees, bees and butterflies plunged into the blossoms.

The highway is realy close but I only heard it in that stretch of wood that is close by. With all the nice things I saw today it took me a little longer. After three hours an almost 8 kilometers I’ve missed the train in Horgen Oberdorf to Zug by half a minute.

third part – summary

It was a spontaneous decision in the morning to do my third strech – a short one from Kilchberg to Rüschlikon. Kilchberg is well known for it’s WW2 refugee Thomas Mann and family.
I walked on a quiet street with blackbirds and sparrows singing, some neat gardens and houses but nothing realy spectaculous.

second part – summary

The second part of my walk took me along the Zürichsee (lake of Zürich). But it wasn’t only as contemplative as it sounds. The Sunday before the Ironman was held in Zürich along the lake. Trash was still laying around and at 7.30 they were already cleaning up the big changing place, which normally is a beautiful lawn by the lakeside. But an unusual shelduck surprised me. And the further away from town and the noisy street I got the more I could enjoy: the sun, a fleeing sparrowhawk and lots of butterflies on Butterfly Bushes.

first part – summary

On Monday I have finaly started walking. The weather was cloudy but still warm. At 7 am sharp the stop watch was set and I was on my way.
It took my 45 minutes along the river Limmat to get to Zurich main station. But for once I went further along the canal to the lake. Beside the birds (see Vögel – birds) I also saw a mouse, fish and a snail. It was a lovely walk through the nature parts of a big city.

This first stretch was around 6 km, took me less than 1h 30min and ended in Zurich Enge from where I will start next time.
